Christmas Eve notes

A few thoughts…

Why celebrate on the 25th of December? Because we’re too busy at other times of the year? It relieves the short-day depression many of us get in winter? Or perhaps it is tied to a superstition from the early centuries following Christ’s birth that a man dies on the same day of the year on which he was conceived. Good Friday in the year 30 whatever occurred on March 25. Add nine months and get December 25. Works for me…

And then why do we exchange presents? Ignoring tales of St. Nickolas throwing bags of money through windows, don’t we always exchange gifts when we meet for momentous occasions? Gifting one another is a way we share our joy and love. Works for me…

Christmas is God’s answer to our question, God can’t you do something in our evil, corrupt, and chaotic world? Can’t you just come, pour out your judgement on the evil , and fix things. He did; he came in human flesh to join us. He showed his love by taking the judgement we deserve on himself on Good Friday (see above), and proclaiming victory on Easter. Works for me…
